Green Citadel

The Green Citadel in Magdeburg was Friedensreich Hundertwasser's last project. The artistic building, however, was only completed after his death in 2005 and is located in the immediate vicinity of the cathedral square. The purpose of the Green Citadel was to build an "oasis for humanity and nature in a sea of rational houses".

Today there are various shops and restaurants on the ground floor of the citadel.

Find out what Hundertwasser inspired for the pink/pink facade.

Old Town Hall

The history of the Old Town Hall dates back to the 12th century and already played an important role in politics at that time. In addition, the "long hall" was located in the building of the town hall, which is nowadays known as Ratskeller and in the past as a storehouse and sales hall.

Unfortunately, the town hall was destroyed during the 30-year war and was rebuilt in the 19th century as a sandstone building in the style of the Italian-Dutch Renaissance.

The Second World War also led to the destruction of the building, which was finally rebuilt in 1965.
If you find glockenspiels interesting or inviting, you should visit the town hall regularly at the Altes Rathaus Magdeburg.

The carillon, with its 47 bells in four octaves and one floor piano, is something very special. The carillon is played daily from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. every full hour, and once a week (friday at 10:00 a. m.) an astonishing carillonneur is played.
